Stephany Djarkasi - Manager of the YER Expat Bureau

“Because to us you are a person rather than a number, we go the extra mile when the situation calls for it."

Imagine that, as a highly skilled professional, you get the chance to advance your career in the Netherlands. Wouldn’t it be great to know that everything will be taken care of for you? All you have to do is pack and unpack your suitcase. The YER Expat Bureau gives international professionals a flying start in the Netherlands, coordinating the entire relocation process from A to Z. Manager Stephany Djarkasi explains how she provides personal guidance to help expats settle into their new life.

Personal guidance for a flying start

“Our team goes to great lengths to ensure that YER expats experience a smooth arrival in the Netherlands. This starts the moment they land at Schiphol. No matter what time you arrive, day or night, we are there to make you feel welcome. We feel it’s important that you are greeted by a familiar face, someone you have spoken to online. That person knows the way and will take you to your new home. Our expats don’t start out in a hotel, or an Airbnb or temporary residence and then have to move."

“To our team, an expat is never just a number. You are a unique individual and have made a life-changing decision to pursue your career in the Netherlands. It’s a big deal. Our job is to help you feel at home as fast as possible. We are here to answer any questions. You can also turn to us if you have any doubts or uncertainties. Having moved to the Netherlands as a student, I know from my own experience what a big step it is.”

Help with all practical and financial matters

“Our one-stop-shop service takes care of all residence-related, practical and financial matters to get you off to a good start in the Netherlands. Things such as housing, a residence permit, a bank account, health insurance. We also assess your expected costs and, if necessary, advance your rent or deposit through a payment arrangement."

“Because to us you are a person rather than a number, we go the extra mile when the situation calls for it. If you want, we can advise you on schools, good childcare facilities and how to connect with other expats. We can help you find furniture and household items, such as a crib or a quilt. You can also reach out to us for advice on SIM cards, OV-chip cards for public transport and digital payment methods, as well as tips on supermarkets and the best places to shop."

“So much is self-evident to those who grew up in the Netherlands. But for a family from a tropical climate for example, it can be a great help to know that they will need warm underwear and good skin care products like body lotion and lip balm to protect them from the cold.”

New home and residence permit quickly arranged

“Finding somewhere to live and obtaining a residence permit are the main stressors for expats. So we do our utmost to arrange both for you before you arrive. The moment we learn of your arrival, we schedule an online orientation call to help you with the preparations. The quick exchange of ideas is key.”

“First, I present a selection of suitable homes for you to choose from. You can assume that every property you are shown is in a desirable neighborhood. Our criterion is simple: we only recommend a property if we would be happy to live there ourselves."

“The second thing we do is immediately apply for a residence permit from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND). Whether this is a residence permit or the extension of a residence permit for an individual or a whole family, our team knows exactly what is needed and what to do. We also inform expats about new legislation and help them complete official documents, which are often in Dutch. Not having to figure all this out yourself saves you a great deal of time.”

Surprisingly good living and working environment in the Netherlands

“Once you are settled in the Netherlands, you will be pleasantly surprised by how well organized everything is. If you need to do some banking for example, you will receive immediate assistance. Everyone is always on time, because in the Netherlands people keep agreements, and public transport is very easy to use. Another advantage is that everyone speaks English. At work, colleagues will make you feel welcome and will switch to English, so you don't feel left out."

“In addition to great career opportunities, there is a good work-life balance, with little overtime and a short commute. You also benefit from the 30% rule, so you pay less tax. There are excellent schools for children and the streets are safe. The Netherlands is also ideally positioned for those who want to see more of Europe and the rest of the world.”

Positive feedback

“In their feedback, expats often tell us that our personal approach makes us stand out from other relocation services. They often say that during the hectic process of relocation, we are a source of refuge: ‘When we talk to you, you always know how to calm us down even when our stress levels are really high."

“I will never forget the response of a South African couple who said, ‘We don’t have enough words to thank you. What YER did for us was amazing!’ They felt so supported by us during their initial period in the Netherlands that it inspired them to adopt our approach when welcoming people from their homeland."

“When you accept a job offer from YER, you can trust us to take care of everything so you can throw yourself into your new role without any hurdles.”
