Join the pinnacle of superyacht construction with an industry-leading yacht builder
The Quality Controller (QC) works within their designated department and reports directly to the Lead Work Preparation & Quality Control or the Production Manager. Functionally, the QC receives guidance from the Project Phase Managers and collaborates closely with the Process Manager QA on methodologies and procedural matters.
The QC is tasked with overseeing the quality of work performed within their discipline during the production phase of a project, including tasks executed by external contractors (OCs). Their primary objective is to uphold all agreed-upon quality standards and drive ongoing process improvements. The QC informs the Phase Manager of any deviations identified and is responsible for inspecting and approving work submitted for acceptance by internal teams or subcontractors.
Core Responsibilities
Quality Assurance
- Supervise active work and raise concerns about quality issues; escalate unresolved matters to the Foreman.
- Conduct all Production Acceptance Tests (PATs) within the discipline, involving both internal and external stakeholders, based on invitations from the executing party.
- Evaluate completed tasks using the quality manual and PAT criteria, supported by QC software.
- Perform supplementary inspections beyond PATs, including random checks when necessary.
- Reject work that does not meet standards and coordinate corrective actions with the responsible team.
- Review proposed deviations and mitigation strategies for their impact on customer satisfaction, compliance, and safety.
Information Management
- Digitally log and store quality-related data in accordance with established procedures.
- Track and document deviations for follow-up and future reference.
- Archive observations to support continuous improvement efforts.
- Ensure new inspection methods, timings, and documentation are added to the PAT checklist.
- Assist in updating protocols, work instructions, and guidelines.
Communication
- Work closely with the construction team to ensure seamless project execution while maintaining quality standards.
- Report overall quality status and processes to the Lead Work Preparation & Quality Control / Production Manager.
- Share inspection outcomes with Project Phase Managers.
- Provide progress updates to the Outfitting Coordinator or Phase Manager; the PAT list is maintained by the project team.
- Attend regular meetings with the Process Manager QA, other QCs, and external inspectors.
- Present findings to production and project teams as needed; client and stakeholder reports are submitted via Project Leads.
- Serve as the main point of contact for external surveyors.
Authority and Decision-Making
- Approve PATs within their discipline.
- Authorize deviations from quality norms, provided they do not compromise customer experience, safety, or regulatory compliance (Class, Flag, or other authorities). All deviations and mitigation plans must be documented and reported to the Phase Manager.
- Escalate unresolved issues; only the Production Manager may override QC decisions after consulting with the Project Manager or Management.
- Offer technical guidance to supervisors and execution teams on quality-related matters.
- Alert supervisors or leads if there is a risk of not meeting the required quality standards.
- Participate in inspections with external surveyors (e.g., Lloyd’s, Safinah) as initiated by Project Management, discuss findings, and promote constructive collaboration.
