Platform Architect

The Platform Architect captures the architectural tasks and responsibilities that are covered in the business platform. In platforms with a sufficiently skilled Director of Technology that is familiar with the domain and application landscape and a Software Engineering population that is mature enough, the accountabilities and responsibilities are assigned to the Director of Technology who will often delegate part of the architecture responsibilities and tasks to Engineering Leaders and/or Software Engineers. In cases where the Director of Technology is new to the domain and/or unfamiliar with the application landscape, the Platform Architect job can be assigned to a dedicated person that supports the Director of Technology, Engineering Leaders and Software Engineers. The Director of Technology remains accountable.

The Platform Architect constructs the platform target architecture roadmap (themes and epics), maintains overview of technical capabilities across the platform, supports teams in designing the architecture of products and identifies relevant technologies for platform development or architectural simplification. The Platform Architect adapts and Implements the enterprise architecture principles in the platform architecture and contributes to changes in the enterprise architecture principles. With Epic Owner, the Platform Architect act as a subject matter expert to determine the relevance of its platform to deliver business product’s value proposition

The Platform Architect job reports to the Director of Technology.

Responsible for:

  • Develop, maintain and execute the platform architecture roadmap in compliance with enterprise wide principles and enterprise target architecture. This roadmap includes all technologies, applications and components in the platform's scope Ensure that the right technologies are chosen in the solution design to a business problem so that functional and technical requirements are optimally realized.
  • Ensure that the overall architecture meets the business objectives.
  • Ensure that the right technologies for a product are chosen such that technical debt and continuity costs are balanced in relation to development costs.
  • Ensure that the platform architecture and the architecture and design of products is in accordance with up-to-date industry best practices on architecture and software design
  • Ensure that the platform architecture and product architecture within teams is in compliance with enterprise wide architecture principles and target architecture
  • Secure compliance with regulations and laws on an architecture level Propose architecture enabler epics and epics to solve technical debt.
  • Document the as-is platform architecture and technology landscape within platform.
  • Ensure that all architectural choices and decisions for the platform align with the enterprise wide and target architecture Identify, implement, evaluate, learn and promote new technologies for further development of the platform and for simplification of the platform architectural landscape
  • Conduct IT impact assessments for new business requirements
  • Support the Director of Product with feature backlog prioritization (for platform optimization Epics) and articulating impacts of trade-offs where architecture enablers/technical debt is an essential part
  • Work closely with Enterprise Architecture to revise the enterprise architectural principles and choices on technology, transversal changes
  • Support in the solution architectural design and on product team delivery where relevant Inform enterprise architects of architecture designs and decisions within the platform
  • Take part in and adhere to the agreed upon architecture governance and processes

Business Platforms take ownership of digitally supporting a related set of business processes by providing a set of matching digital products. The Director of Product and Director of Technology take accountability for the business impact generated by the business platform. The business platform is organized in product teams which take care of the digital products that are in scope for the business platform.

  • Proficiency in advising on best practices, trends, opportunities, pros and cons to support operational, tactical or strategic decision making on architecture and technology choices
  • Proficiency on implementation and interpretation of architecture principles by teams
  • Proficiency in design of new architecture principles, adjustment of existing architecture princples, phase-out of existing architecture principles
  • 8 years of experience in IT, in a variety of environments
