The Functional Safety Engineer is responsible for the design and development of safety concepts for sensors in the automotive industry. The role is varied and challenging and will involve all aspects of the design, development, manufacture, assembly, integration and test for automotive control and sensing applications.


The Functional Safety Engineer performs functional safety management activities according to relevant automotive standards during all project phases. The ISO26262 functional safety standard is the base for the majority of the activities. The goal of this standard is to prevent that an electrical system can cause any kind of harm to the user or the environment. This aspect is gaining importance now that the world is moving to autonomous systems like self-driving cars. The safety engineer reports to the manager Design Engineering Sensor Products.

Most important tasks and responsibilities:

  • Create functional safety awareness across departments
  • Perform hazard analysis, DFMEA, FMEDA, qualitative and quantitative fault tree analysis
  • Definition of DIA with customers (Development Interface Agreement)
  • Develop safety plans to ensure compliance with ISO26262
  • Lead and coordinate creation of functional safety documentation according ISO26262 for projects
  • Conduct reviews with product teams to ensure functional safety standards are being met throughout product development cycles
  • Collaborate with project managers, development team and customers on functional safety
  • Knowledge of mixed signal ASIC development processes
  • Qualification & validation of engineering designs

  • Bachelor or Master in for example Computer Science or likewise


Educational requirements:

  • Master or Bachelor education level, Electrical engineering
  • 3-5 year relevant experience of mixed signal circuit design & systems for use in automotive control and sensing environment

Additional requirements:

  • An understanding of sensor physics
  • Good communication skills, written and verbally, in English
  • Knowledge of Dutch and German language is an advantage
  • Result oriented
  • A team player with the ability to work to tight deadlines in a multi-discipline, multi-project environment
  • Desire to learn new skills and techniques
  • Experience in electronics/systems/software design and development
  • Experiences in the application of safety standards ISO26262 and IEC61508 and automotive safety analysis
